Yeehaw!!! Masked country crooner Orville Peck brings the first leg of his Man Turned Mule Tour, in support of his upcoming album, Mule (out on September 18th), to Brooklyn Paramount on November 9th and 10th with special guest Abbie Callahan.
Orville Peck, born Daniel Pitout, lived in Johannesburg, South Africa for the first 15 years of his life where he taught himself piano and guitar before immigrating to Canada in 2003. He released his debut album, Pony, in 2019, which hit the top five of Billboard’s Heatseekers chart and was nominated for a number of awards, including a win for Best Country Album at the 2020 Libera Awards. His debut landed him a spot as an Apple Music Up Next Artist which greatly boosted his platform, providing him with a short film, a Beats 1 interview, and a performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Pony first introduced Peck to the world as the mysterious singer in a cowboy hat and colorful fringed mask who proudly positions his gay identity front and center on sweeping serenades like album opener, “Dead of Night,” as he puts his own spin on established country music tropes. He says that the mask isn’t meant to conceal his identity, but rather help him express it, explaining that “this is the most sincere thing I’ve ever done. The point is combining ultra-sincerity with a heightened version of who you are at your core.”
Also in 2019, he created Orville Peck’s Rodeo, an annual 3-day music festival featuring intimate performances from an eclectic mix of artists (including Peck himself), community gatherings, and drag shows. A year later, he released the Billboard Top 200-charting EP, Show Pony, through Columbia Records, on which upped the ante with a showstopping duet with country legend Shania Twain and an epic closing cover of Bobbie Gentry’s “Fancy,” solidifying Peck’s much deserved place in the country music canon. Signing with Warner Records, he released Bronco in 2022, written in the midst of the pandemic, on which he rose above the darkness to create a grandiose tour-de-force that expanded his artistic vision with a cinematic production boost from Jay Joyce and an added ‘60s-pop shine from cowriter Tobias Jesso Jr. 2024’s Stampede saw Peck racking up an impressive array of collaborations and covers, including features from artists like Elton John, Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway, and Willie Nelson, and fresh takes on country classics like “Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond of Each Other” and “Rhinestone Cowboy.”
After removing his mask to play the Emcee in the Broadway revival of Cabaret and releasing the 2025 EP, Appaloosa, Peck has announced his upcoming album, Mule, slated for release on September 18th. The album, from which has put out the the three-part harmony “Prologue (Eulogy Of A Man Turned Mule)” (with Emmylou Harris, Noah Cyrus, and Allison Russell) and the incredibly catchy, train beat-driven “Too Little, Too Late,” and has teased “is a chronological account of the year I lost my way,” is gearing up to be Peck’s most vulnerable record yet. Known for his signature commandingly soulful, buttery smooth croon, unique balance of heartache, humor, and queer desire, and propensity for tear-jerking ballads, Orville Peck has established himself as both a queer icon and a country music one. His concerts are equally expansive, seeing audiences made up of “members of the LGBT+ community that wouldn’t necessarily be at a country show, mega-fans in Orville Peck masks, couples in their 80s who are huge country fans, drag queens, five-year-olds!,” all united to see Peck’s massively rocking, vibrantly ethereal, boot-stomping hoedown of a performance.
