Thundercat embarks on the Distracted AF Tour across North America this fall in support of his new album, Distracted, arriving at Kings Theater on October 23rd with special guest TiaCorine.
Now recognized as one the greatest bassists of all time by Rolling Stone, Thundercat (Stephen Lee Bruner) was born in Compton, LA in 1984 to a family of musicians including mother Pamela D. Bruner (multi-instrumentalist and flautist), father Ronald Bruner Sr. (who drummed for the Temptations, the Supremes, Gladys Knight, and more), and brother Ronald Bruner Jr. (former drummer of Suicidal Tendencies). Growing up inspired by bass legends such as Marcus Miller and Stanley Clarke, Bruner would sneak into jazz clubs and jam with his close friend, jazz composition and saxophone extraordinaire Kamasi Washington, with Bruner later playing bass for Washington’s earliest releases. After a brief stint in a German boy band, he joined his brother in legendary crossover-thrash band, Suicidal Tendencies, from 2002 to 2011. Towards the end of his time with ST he lent his virtuosic bass playing to studio albums and live shows for genre-bending hip-hop legends Erykah Badu and Flying Lotus, who helped him hone his artistic identity as Thundercat and encouraged him to make his own music.
Flying Lotus has contributed his production prowess for each of Thundercat’s studio albums, releasing each of them through his independent label, Brainfeeder, beginning with 2011’s The Golden Age of Apocalypse and 2013’s Apocalypse. In 2015, Thundercat played a large role in the making of Kendrick Lamar’s groundbreaking, Grammy-winning jazz-rap album, To Pimp a Butterfly, winning a Grammy for Best Melodic Rap Performance for his work on “These Walls.” In 2017, Thundercat released his third studio album, Drunk, which featured the hit song, “Them Changes,” as well as features from Kendrick Lamar, Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald, and more. 2020’s It Is What It Is, inspired by and reckoning with the death of Bruner’s close friend and collaborator, Mac Miller, won Thundercat a Grammy for Best Progressive R&B Album. Earlier this year, Thundercat released his first album in six years, Distracted. The album continues Thundercat’s unique blend of electronics, R&B, jazz fusion, and hip-hop including support from DOMI & JD BECK, Tame Impala, Flying Lotus, and many more, including a previously unreleased track featuring the late Mac Miller. He also doesn’t shy away from the eclectic brand of humor that has come to play a large role in his music, referencing Star Wars (“Anakin Learns His Fate”), talking to his cats (singing “Cat brain, meow, meow” and “Dear Lord, send help, I’m talking to my cats, meow” on “Great Americans”), and much more.
