Mastodon brings The Poisonous Weapons Tour for their upcoming album, Marrow Deep (out on August 28) to NYC on September 24th for a show at Brooklyn Paramount with support from Deafheaven and Alcest.
Mastodon was formed in 2000 in Atlanta, Georgia by vocalist and bassist Troy Sanders, vocalist and drummer Brann Dailor, vocalist and guitarist Brent Hinds, and guitarist Bill Kelliher. They emerged with a bang in 2002 with their debut album, Remission, which was praised for its uniquely aggressive sound, greatly driven by Dailor’s relentlessly busy drum parts due in part to unresolved trauma he was working through. Sanders described the album as the band’s “fire record,” a fitting description for its exploration of deep existential dread through a white-hot attack. The band’s second album, Leviathan (a concept album based on Moby Dick), was named album of the year by renowned rock and heavy metal magazines, Revolver, Kerrang!, and Terrorizer. Mastodon’s third album, 2011’s The Hunter, debuted at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 200 and featured the song “Curl of the Burl” which was nominated for a Grammy for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance (one of six career Grammy nominations for the band). Throughout their two and a half decade career, Mastodon has continued to release one highly successful album after the other, with 2006’s Blood Mountain being ranked at number 9 on Rolling Stones Top 50 Albums of the Year list and every subsequent album reaching the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 200 chart. 2017’s Emperor of Sand won a Grammy for Best Metal Performance for the opening track “Sultan’s Curse” and the song “Show Yourself also peaked at no. 4 on the US Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart (the band’s most commercially successful song yet).
In 2025, Hinds departed from the group and tragically passed away a couple months later, with the rest of the band working together to split up his vocal parts for current performances. Earlier this summer, the band released the documentary, The Mastodon in the Room, in which they watch archival footage of the band and reflect on their relationship with their former bandmate and friend. On August 28th, they will release their 9th studio album, Marrow Deep, from which they have released the singles, “Your Ghost Again,” and “Snakes for Dinner.” The band also officially added lead guitarist Nick Johnston and keyboardist João Nogueira as full time members who will be joining the band for the upcoming Poisonous Weapons Tour. Praised for their crushing blend of rock and metal genres featuring technically outstanding prog arrangements, highly elaborate concepts and astute lyrics, and a relentless sonic barrage, Mastodon has established themselves as one of the preeminent metal bands of the 21st Century (although the members themselves prefer a less confined genre label).
