Icelandic indie-folk icons, Of Monsters and Men, bring The Mouse Parade Tour to Central Park SummerStage on September 23rd with support from August Ponthier!
Formed in Garðabær in 2010 when singers and guitarists Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir and Ragnar “Raggi” Þórhallsson, guitarist Brynjar Leifsson, and drummer Arnar Rósenkranz Hilmarsson won the annual Músíktilraunir music competition in Iceland, Of Monsters and Men expanded to their full size for the Iceland Airwaves festival, adding bassist Kristján Páll Kristjánsson. Later that year, indie radio station KEXP released a video of the band performing their breakthrough song, the trumpet-laden “Little Talks,” in Raggi’s living room, which went viral in the United States and along with the song’s recurrent air time on Philadelphia’s Radio 104.5 propelled the band to international popularity. Of Monsters and Men signed with Record Records in 2011, releasing their debut album My Head Is an Animal (of which “Little Talks” was the lead single), reaching number one in Iceland before being re-released worldwide through Universal Music Group in 2012 and reaching the top 10 of nearly every major worldwide chart. The album brought the band even further success, selling over 2 million copies worldwide and landing them spots at countless major festivals including Newport Folk Festival, Lollapalooza, Reading and Leeds, and Glastonbury.
Of Monsters and Men continued making inspiring indie folk on 2015’s dramatically cinematic, Beneath the Skin, and transformed into distortion-wielding rockers on 2019’s, FEVER DREAM, which reached number one on the Billboard Top Rock Albums chart. In 2025, they released their latest album, All is Love and Pain in the Mouse Parade, through their newly-minted label, Skarkali Records. The album continues with everything that has always made Of Monsters and Men hugely successful: the beautifully executed interplay between the vocals of Hilmarsdóttir and Þórhallsson, the ethereal soundscapes supplied by atmospheric guitars and keyboards, and the massively uplifting choruses. The album is also praised for its lush imagery that explores themes of loneliness, longing, belonging, and connection with others, with Hilmarsdóttir explaining that “the sense of community, which is kind of sprinkled all over this album, it’s a thing that we were really looking deeply at, and I think craving a little bit.” With shows known for their grand scale and transcendental ability to provide euphoria and communal release for the audience, you won’t want to miss Of Monsters and Men play hits from The Mouse Parade and more at Central Park SummerStage on September 23rd!
