Fiddlehead at Warsaw on July 31st

Post-hardcore supergroup Fiddlehead heads out on the road for their new EP, Baby I’ll Change, with an impressive variety of openers, ranging from legendary shoegaze band Nothing to Drug Church’s Patrick Kindlon-lead Self Defense Family. Fiddlehead arrives at Warsaw in Brooklyn on July 31st with support from Elliot, Self Defense Family, and Posición Unida.

Fiddlehead was formed in Boston in 2014 by members of multiple iconic post-hardcore bands: vocalist Patrick Flyyn and drummer Shawn Costa of Have Heart, guitarists Alex Henery of Basement and Alex Dow of Big Contest, and bassist Nick Hinsch of Stand Off and Nuclear Age. Fiddlehead emerged in 2014 with their debut EP, Out of the Bloom, which featured their signature fusion of ‘80s inspired emo and muscular, anthemic punk, lead by Patrick Flynn’s emotionally-raw, ragged wail. They released their first full-length album, Springtime and Blind, in 2018 after signing with punk and emo staple, Run For Cover Records. The album was praised for its cathartic exploration of grief, inspired by the loss of Flynn’s father (described through the lens of his mother), matching the pain of the lyrics with energetic and punchy instrumentals. The band released their thematic followup, Between the Richness, in 2021 on which Flynn reconciled with the ten year anniversary of his father’s passing coinciding with the birth of his son. The emotionally-pummeling album, which is bookended by E.E. Cummings’ “I Carry Your Heart,” peaked at 68 on the Top Album Sales chart and received rave reviews from music magazines with Stereogum naming it the best album of the first half of the year. Fiddlehead concluded the thematic trilogy with the philosophically charged, Death Is Nothing to Us, which includes features from more of hardcore’s finest.

In June, they put out their latest release, the three song EP, Baby I’ll Change. Written in response to the sudden loss of Flynn’s mother, the EP which features the devastating lead-single of the same name, holds a deep emotional weight and solidifies Flynn’s reputation as one of hardcore’s most thoughtful and vulnerable lyricists. The band, which typically does festivals and small runs of shows due to other commitments (Flynn is a full-time high school history teacher), is accompanying this release with a unique 15-city North American tour this summer.
