Sleep at Brooklyn Paramount on November 16th

Stoner doom metal band Sleep heads out on a North American tour this fall, stopping in NYC with a show at Brooklyn Paramount on November 16th.

Sleep was formed in San Jose, California in 1990 by members of the hardcore punk band, Asbestosdeath, with the original lineup consisting of bassist and vocalist Al Cisneros, drummer Chris Hakius, and guitarists Matt Pike and Justin Marler. After releasing their debut album, Volume One, in 1991 (shortly before Justin Marler’s departure from the group), they released Sleep’s Holy Mountain in 1992, garnering widespread attention and contributing to their growing status as a highly influential 1990s metal band. Both Holy Mountain and the subsequent Dopesmoker are praised as doom and stoner metal classics and led to critic Eduardo Rivadavia’s description of them as “perhaps the ultimate stoner rock band.” London Record’s refusal to release Dopesmoker as a single, hour-long track, as the band had intended, caused the group to break up in 1995.

The band returned in 2009 to perform two exclusive reunion sets as part of Britain’s All Tomorrow’s Parties music festival, where they debuted an unreleased song, “Antarcticans Thawed,” followed by a full North American tour in 2010. In 2012, the band officially declared themselves fully reunited. In 2018, they released their first album in 20 years, The Sciences, generating huge excitement among their fanbase and receiving massive critical acclaim. Pitchfork commented that the album “makes everything that was originally great about Sleep even better” and Spin declared that the record gave “stoner-metal acolytes a bonafide miracle.” After an indefinite hiatus in 2019, the band made a return to live performances in 2022. Now, four years later, they have announced a fall tour with a new lineup consisting of Cisneros on bass and vocals, Dale Crover on drums, and Bubba Dupree on guitar. They also released their first piece of new music in eight years, “Have Spaceship Will Travel,” accompanied by the new Sleep Comic Book that follows the adventures of the space-traveling Marijuanaut from The Sciences album.
