Billie Eilish, a vegan since the age of 12, has been a longtime animal rights activist. Often uses her platform to support animal rights; however, in this instance, recent comments she made certainly ruffled a few feathers. After the remark ignited backlash online, the ‘Birds of a Feather’ singer went to social media to doubled down on her stance, “eating meat is inherently wrong” in a recent interview.
“Go watch a documentary or two and some footage of what is done to the animals u claim to love and what it does to the planet u pretend to love as well,” Eilish wrote Thursday night. “If that footage was hard for u to watch I encourage u to pls take a look at urself.”
During a video interview with Elle, last week the artist was asked, “What’s one hill you’d die on?” The backlash soon came in at full force, with social media users accusing Eilish’s stance of coming from a privileged position, which she did not entertain. Eilish began by sharing a series of graphic videos depicting the treatment of animals who are facing slaughter, posted on her Instagram Story for all of her 124 million followers to see.
“Y’all are not going to like me for this one… eating meat is inherently wrong. And the other thing is, two things can not coincide: ‘I love animals. I love all animals so much, and I eat meat.’ You just can’t do both, sorry,” She responded.
The online rant is likely to attract much attention, as Eilish and coveted filmmaker James Cameron have a new concert film, Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D), hitting the cinema on May 8th.
“Like, I am so tired of standing up for/having empathy for living beings being controversial. pls continue to live in a constant state of cognitive dissonance and denial and try to convince urself that ur not living a lie,” She added.
