Turning pessimism into optimism, blissfully.
On their newest project, titled Sunniest of Days, Vancouver-based artist Kimmortal proves that they can tell an emotional story and share optimistic lyrics over lush production. In their over 10-year long career, Kimmortal has released some incredible music, but nothing comes close to the beauty that is Sunniest of Days. It’s raw, powerful and really shows a lot of prowess and skill from Kimmortal.
Diving more into the lyrical content, it is easy to see that Kimmortal is struggling. On the title track, the first line that they spit is, “Wake up in the morning, feeling all alone.” However, throughout this verse, they turn their current mood around and find a way to uplift themselves, and despite it being “so hard to sleep at night,” they still find a way to finish out the verse proclaiming “We won’t give up.” The third track is a skit, called “Trapped!!” In this 20 second song, Kimmortal states, “We’re trapped!” This sentiment almost feels like they are talking to themselves, as the message of being against yourself and feeling stuck is prevalent throughout the entire record. On their Bandcamp page, Kimmortal states that this record is a message to themself, as they “work on accepting [their] past with love.”
As far as the instrumentals go, they are beautifully produced. Heavenly keys, blissful strings, incredible horns and soft drums are apparent throughout the entire EP. Perhaps the greatest instrumentation is on the second track, “I Just Wanna Know,” where Kimmortal and fellow producer Miles Wong construct a musical masterpiece. The groovy bass is the cherry on top, lifting the track to a higher level. The same attention to detail is seen on every track on this record, as the whole thing is chock full of wonderful moments and gorgeous beats.
All in all, Kimmortal presents what will be considered a future classic in the R&B/hip-hop fusion world. With vibrant production, affirming lyrics and a clear artistic vision, Sunniest of Days feels light on its feet but strong in its impact. It is a joyful and confident release that lives up to its name, offering a refreshing moment in Kimmortal’s growing discography.
