Sumo Cyco performs mind-numbing jams on Neon Void.
Sumo Cyco is a Canadian metal band consisting of lead vocalist Skye Sweetnam, guitarist Matt Drake, bassist Oscar Anesetti and drummer Joey Muha. The band started as a punk-metal act in ’11 and has since released three studio albums and various singles. And in October 2025, Sumo Cyco released the album, Neon Void, which is fantastic because each track is filled with endless and flawless metal, pop and rock music.
Kicking things off is “Shivers.” What is fabulous about the whole thing is how the music has a strong blend of a pop-metal vibe that brings a No Doubt vibe before Sweetman starts screaming out the mind-bending words in passion. This tune is rather amusing thanks to Sumo Cyco adding a successful mix of different music genres.
Another jammer is “Villains,” and right off the bat, another No Doubt feeling can be felt through Sweetnam’s bittersweet attitude. The vocalist’s tone adds an extra dose of badassery, while the rest of the band sizzles the atmosphere with heart-jolting music that is capable of causing some listeners to head-bang along.
Now, “Clockwork” is a bit different from the previous ditties because the music has a heavier sound. While listening, the instrumentation consists of heavy metal and rock sounds that complement the vocalist’s attitude and honestly, the music gives “Clockwork” a strong dose of endless high energy and madness, which is felt through each guitar riff and drum beat.
Another eye-catching composition is “Abandon All Ships,” and what is fabulously fantastic about the whole production is how the music seamlessly blends ska and metal genres. The metal can be felt in the chorus, but what really shines is hearing the ska infuse a groovy vibe into a dark and mysterious theme.
Neon Void is an album that sees Sumo Cyco sharing their beautiful and creative music with those who are willing to listen. Surely, the music will sound just as good live.
