Album Review: Midlake – A Bridge To Far

A Bridge To Far is transcendent and mythical.

Midlake split in ’14 due to a creative differentiation that led to their front man leaving. This split lasted for a while until ’22. They came back with For The Sake of Bethel Woods, and now their latest release, A Bridge To Far. This record alone is enough to have fans be thankful for their return.

Reaching out for your hand, Midlake is inviting everyone into their journey that is A Bridge Too Far. “Days Gone By” begs to be felt, not listened to. This track shoots with melodies and a bridge carried by a flute.

Featuring Madison Cunningham, “Guardians,” takes a classic version of a duet with a subtle crescendo. Eric Pulido and Madison dance around with each other. Leading into “Make Haste,” the fifth track on the record, Midlake goes into a smoother, funkier feel. This track is in a deeper register than the pervious songs, again showing the group’s growth and development over the years they spent not putting out music together.

Getting a little poppy, “The Calling” is about being ready for what is next and hearing the calling for what is to happen, whatever that may be.

Kicking off “Within/Without” is a low electric riff, claiming the tempo and emotion of the track. This track is a slow build up, going back to a smooth powerful sound. Pulido’s voice is perfect for the sound the band has created for themselves. This song is comforting yet eerie all in one and can send a listener into a trance.

Midlake’s A Bridge To Far is it’s own world. Something so magical about this band is that each member comes together to create a feeling that is out of this world. Each instrument is in direct communication with the rest to create a perfectly harmonious band and record.
