Album Review: Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers – Glory

Rebellious teen love.

The band that was born at a sleepover after being inspired by School of Rock, Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers bring their second album, Glory. The hard rock drums mixed with the bratty feelings behind the lyrics create an angsty tone.

The first song of the album, “WATCHING ME LEAVE,” has a moderately fast tempo and a chorus that’ll have you smirking. It’s the perfect addition for your “wee-woo” driving playlist. It has an angry smug tone and an echo effect on the vocals that while fun, can be a little overbearing. It does set up the tone for the album well.

The bass and guitar work together playing only a few notes and a chord to start off the song “MOTHER” with a modern western feel. The song starts slow and low, then rapidly speeds up, creating a cowboy-chase ambience. The guitarist makes great use of the whammy bar, most notably at the end of the song.

Throughout the album there are two clashing feelings in the lyrics. Being obsessed and in love, and ignoring and complaining about someone who’s obsessed and in love with you. These tones meet near the end of the album in the song “UNSCARRED.” On the surface, the lyrics make it sound like the singer is simply telling someone off – “You’re falling for me but I’m telling you I’m done being someone you ignore.” However, when you dig deeper you’ll find there is more to the story. That story is revealed in the middle of the song as the singer says: “Two weeks in and you don’t answer your phone, I’m losing my mind, I was so happy being alone till you changed my mind.” The singer had fallen in love and reached out for two weeks just to be ignored. Now the other person is falling for the singer, but they are not having it after the way they were treated. Through vocal tone you can tell this still hurts. This song summarizes the overarching tone of the album well, and begins to bring the album to a close.

“WONDERFUL,” the final song, brings it to a bittersweet end. The guitar sparks hope, and gets to take the spotlight during the bridge to the end.

Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers have found their audience and are living their dream. This album proves that through their passion and love for music, they will continue to become glorious.

Adam Skelly: I review Indie-rock. I skateboard when my car runs out of coolant. I make mixtapes to listen to music.
