All fuzz, no filler

There’s no denying that Margarita Witch Cult knows their sound—and sticks to it. Strung Out in Hell, their latest offering, doubles down on the fuzz-heavy, riff-forward aesthetic that listeners know and demand. It’s gritty, a little spooky and heavy in all the right places without trying too hard.

The album jumps right in with “Crawl Home to Your Coffin,” a slow, stomping track that sets the mood with thick, buzzing guitars. The vocals sit pretty low in the mix, giving it an eerie vibe without overpowering the instrumentals.

“Scream Bloody Murder” ups the tempo just enough to feel like a shift with a welcome solo section that breaks through the haze. The song gets that added burst of energy needed to keep listeners guessing while simultaneously anticipating what’s to come. The band refuses to shy away from dark, creepy themes with a bit of theatrical flair, sticking close to that horror-metal vibe they’ve made their own.

Songs like “Conqueror Worm” dive into thick, heavy doom rock, with lots of layered distortion and a moody feel. Then there’s “Witches Candle,” which shakes things up with tighter instrument work and a more urgent, driving energy. Here, you can really feel the band lock in as a unit, everyone hammering forward in time.

The album wraps up with “Who Put Bella in the Wych Elm,” a dark, moody track that’s more like a performance than a typical song. Its ritual-like rhythm takes things into experimental territory, polishing off the record with a dramatic feel.

There’s a cohesiveness to Strung Out in Hell that’s what fans come to recognize. The band has clearly carved out a distinct sound, refusing to stray from its roots, and it’s a sound that’s unflinching and unapologetic. It’s fun and hits right when you need something that’s equal parts broody and gritty, no questions asked.
