New ideas for new death metal.

Upon exploring the German metal band, Nightbearer, one will discover a powerful dose of heavy metal in their newest release in June of  2025, – their new album, Defiance. This release is Nightbearer’s third full-length album. Defiance contains 12 tracks of powerfully clear and fast thrash metal that creates a profoundly dark atmosphere due to Nightbearer’s primary influence since their formation in 2017: Swedish death metal.

In addition to the band’s influences, lifelong band members include front man and Nightbearer’s current vocalist, Michael Torka and Dominik Hellmuth. Hellmuth is the lead guitarist, with the ability to play most other instruments for the album as well but he also collaborated with the other four band members in the album’s production. The band’s established sound comes from the lineup that includes Torka (vocals), Hellmuth (lead and rhythm guitars, bass and studio recording), Tristan Schubert (Rhythm Guitar), Floran Bohmfeld (bass) and Manual Luke (Drums). At this time, the ensemble that plays together on this album signifies the evolving musicality of their sound.

The third track, “Defiance,” immediately gives the listener the impression of the band’s strengths in making epic sounds and melodies. The recording begins with a dark melody, before erupting into speed thrash as vocalist Torka growls and shrieks. In addition, the lyrics are Nightbearer’s tribute to Swedish death metal and its profound influences on the band.

Shifting gears, the fourth track, “One Church Over All,” is another musical selection that has a deliberately slower, heavy and trudging riff, with a tyrannical central theme. The drum beat in this song is different from many of the other songs on the album, with rapid-fire drumming as opposed to many quick drum rolls concurrently. All of these instrumental elements forge an oppressive beat, symbolizing the power of a church over its people.

Furthermore, the ninth track, “Until We Meet Again,” is a captivating instrumental that distinguishes itself with a soaring melody over an accelerated, beating rhythm. It is a shift from the raw, aggressive death metal to a more complex and differentiated sound. This musical piece demonstrates Nightbearer’s versatility.

Ultimately, Nightbearer’s final album, Defiance, will please most long time death metal enthusiasts as it displays their range of capabilities that they have  cultivated over the years. Death metal music fans that are newer to the scene may be compelled to listen to Nightbearer’s new album because their music has become more contemporary from their beginning work as they continue to push and develop their specific death metal style.
