R&B and gospel singer and civil rights activist Mavis Staples is having a four-city tour starting today, Dec. 3. Her second stop on the tour will be in Chicago at the Auditorium Theatre on Dec. 6 with special guests Jackson Browne and Margo Price. Her stop in Chicago is in celebration of her 85th Hometown Birthday Celebration.
Mavis Staples is a legendary R&B and gospel singer and activist for civil rights. She got her start making music in 1960 in a family band called The Staple Singers, which is most known for their song “I’ll Take You There,” released in 1973. Mavis is the last surviving member of the group.
As the group rose to fame, Mavis began her solo work in 1969 with the release of her first album, self-titled, Mavis Staples. She has released 13 studio albums, nine singles, and one EP. She has worked with numerous acclaimed musicians like Aretha Franklin, Prince, David Byrne, and former partner Bob Dylan. Most recently, she joined Maggie Rogers on stage during her tour stop in Chicago at the United Center.
Mavis Staples is a beloved artist. She has won three Grammys and is the recipient of Grammy’s Lifetime Achievement Award as well. She was also named one of the “100 Greatest Singers of All Time” by Rolling Stone in 1999.
Through her activist rights, she has made a huge impact on not just the music industry but also society, and many of her songs are protest songs.
