Willie Nelson has released four albums in 2024. His recent release, Last Leaf On The Tree, explores different emotions and sonic styles.
With an exceptionally smooth low sound, the bass, low beats, and soft piano on “If It Wasn’t Broken” set the tone for the melancholy lyrics. Despite not having much lyrical content, this song has a deep and powerful message. “How would you know you had a heart if it wasn’t broken” delivers the concept that you can not have joy or love without feeling the hurt that comes with it when it is gone.
As “Lost Cause” goes through the verses, the production expands to the sky gradually and, rather than reaching a tipping point, descends back down as the song ends. This is done in such a subtle yet effective way that it is possible since the production is already so soft. The littlest builds take the most vital strides for the song.
“Robbed Blind” is a straightforward song for the majority about being schemed against and robbed. Nelson incorporates coin sounds in the background, but it is almost mundane. Towards the end, he ties it into his heart, which is stolen yet still at the surface level.
With the same theme of staying surface level and not diving deep enough into the meaning Nelson is trying to convey, “Are You Ready For The Country” does not give sufficient for listener interpretation. It is difficult to figure out the background sound effects as they sound chaotic and patternless.
“Do you realize we’re floating in space? / Let them know you realize that life goes fast / It’s just an illusion caused by the world spinning ‘round.” These lyrics and this song bring this album back to earth on the ninth track, “Do You Realize.” There is a powerful meaning that Nelson is delivering to someone, as it seems to be a letter, with an analysis of the big picture of life and a realization that we all exist on this planet and will someday be gone.
“Broken Arrow” starts with chilling harmonies, yet a very upbeat guitar and overall production. The tone switches throughout the song, from swing and folk to an eerie sound that goes back and forth during this six-minute and 41-second song.
Last Leaf On The Tree combines deep, beautiful pieces and some empty, almost meaningless ones. With how much music Willie Nelson puts out, it is as if we see a jumble of thoughts and stories as he loves to write, whether complex or simple.
