Live Review: Hinds at The Paramount

The guitar-shredding Spanish duo Hinds, took the Paramount Theater stage on Sunday night.

In honor of their new album, Viva Hinds, the band ventured out on a world tour or as the duo calls it a “Viva Hinds, world domination.” The album is a mix of both English and Spanish classic indie dance beats and even features Grammy-winning artist Beck.

On the third day of their tour, Hinds stopped in Los Angeles. It was not long before the quaint theater had patrons packed from the back brick wall to the stage. The duo walked on stage, sporting eccentric outfits, unconcealable smiles and holding cans of Modelo. The crowd cheered as the band shared their excitement to be in Los Angeles and be on tour. They kicked off the show with the opening track of their new album, “Hi, How Are You.”

It only took a few seconds before the music began and the crowd began swallowing attendees into a massive pit of dancing and jumping. About 30 minutes into the set and after some humorous back-and-fourth from the band, they took a pause. Co-founder and vocalist, Ana García Perrote, looked into the audience and shared a brief moment of vulnerability.

“When we write songs we just write how we feel,” said Perrote. “What this album is really about is not how you fall, but how you stand up. This is Hinds standing up!”

With a rocky year for the pair, including a debate about ending the band and Perrote breaking her foot, Hinds came back more resilient than ever. Greeted by roars of cheers and applause, the band went back to their set.

Two words come to mind when watching Hinds perform- girl power. It was refreshing to see an iconic female duo absolutely dominate the stage and get lost in their performance. In between singing, the band members jammed on stage, even playing guitar back to back and holding impressive riffs.

At one point of the show, both the band and the crowd were so lost in the music and excitement that at first they hardly noticed when Carlotta Cosials, jumped into the pit and crowd surfed over the audience. The audience’s cheers got louder and they danced with her for a brief moment before carrying her back to the stage.  It was such a pure moment of fun and intimacy between the band and the audience.

The show ended with a cover of Thee Headcoatees’ “Davey Crockett,” another all-female band. When the song ended, all four members of the band came to the front of the stage, posed for a moment and then began dancing with the audience. From the rainbow backdrop and fun flashing lights to the dancing, it was a wholesome experience.

Although there was no encore, the band’s performance of Viva Hinds in its entirety was enough to keep fans satisfied and leave with a post-concert high. With bubbly personalities, resilient attitudes and just pure talent, Hinds were a pleasure to watch.
