Album Review: Mushroomhead – Call The Devil

Earth-shattering, high quality metal

Mushroomhead are known for their own head-jolting blend of metal music and the band’s recent album, Call The Devil only serves as a reminder of their highly regarded status in the genre. Their sonic exploration is refreshing, creating its own havoc through their dynamic instrumentation and high quality musicianship. Call The Devil is a great example of how powerful metal music can be in today’s world, especially in terms of the boundary pushing sounds that the band strives for on their latest output.

“Fall In Line” is a true head-banger thanks to the stellar guitar work, particularly the stunning riffs which are skillfully mixed front and center. The dark, bold vocals serenade listeners with killer screams that smoothly transition into bittersweet harmonies, adding a melodic quality to the music that makes it phenomenal.

Another fantastic ditty is “Prepackaged.” As a whole, the heart-stopping composition features a higher and harder tone, showcasing the sheer range that come with Steve Rauckhorst and Scott Beck’s collaborative vocals. Right away, the rage is palpable, yet the harmonies incorporated within the chorus add another layer of depth to the track. Perhaps the centerpiece of “Prepackaged” is hearing Rauckhorst’s deep growl, delivering the lyrics with an undeniable passion.

Just like the previous song, “Hideous” is really creative. Towards the beginning of the track, the instrumentation maintains a harmonic style before switching to the hard-hitting chorus. The vocal performances on “Hideous” constantly change course, offering a dynamic style that remains cohesive throughout while leaving fans on the edge of their seats.

“Shame In A Basket” is a standout from the tracklist. The song starts out with an eerie yet elegant piano accompanied by melodic vocals. Beneath the dark, macabre atmosphere is a delicate vibe, that is, until the track bursts into a more classic metal sound, taking over with boundless sonic chaos. The production on “Shame In A Basket,” as well as the album as a whole is thoroughly compelling, letting each element shine through.

Mushroomhead’s love for making metal music can be felt on Call The Devil and their fans are sure to experience the band’s musical passion on each soul-shaking track.
