Album Review: Lenny Kravitz – Blue Electric Light

“60 is the new 30”

Five years before most retire, Lenny Kravitz has been reaching seemingly outrageous peaks in his career and stardom. After releasing a 12th studio album, multiple music videos and a live performance at the UEFA Champions League Final 2024 Kick Off Show by Pepsi, Kravitz has amassed millions of streams and millions of views alone, generating a powerful resurgence in a rockstar who never left. Flashy, gaudy, visuals are flaunted in his video, showcasing the emphasized youthful demeanor of Kravitz. His YouTube videos garner a wide response from excited, outspoken fans.

Listening to this album is an encouraging experience for rock fans, especially for those who are convinced that the genre is dying. Kravitz’s signature songwriting perfectly matches the modern day production that encompasses and glues together generations of art.

There’s lots of fresh dance elements on the album, which foreshadow the exciting official remixes that have been uploaded on YouTube following the release of Blue Electric Light. Popular artists like Kaleena Zanders and LF System have remixed music on the album to create some really interesting results.

“It’s Just Another Fine Day (In This Universe of Love)” opens the project up in a gentle, loving way which some have perceived as yet another love letter to Kravitz’s ex wife, actress Lisa Bonet. However, the album picks up pace throughout its runtime, quickly changing emotions.

“TK421,” the lead single on this project, boasts a strong funky groove that encourages dancing. This piece almost permeates through to the other tracks on the album, all possessing the warm euphoric human desire to move around to music.

“Let It Ride” is a truly sultry number, that albeit sonically different from the rest of the album, showcases Kravitz’s affinity for funk. A bouncy synth and an undeniably danceable beat propel the song forward along with Kravitz’s sensual vocals. The lyrics touch upon a passionate romp, encouraging the listener to simply “free your inhibitions,” in other words, do what feels good, freeing oneself from unnecessary expectations and societal norms in favor of enjoying all life has to offer. Lyrically, this song serves as a sort of thematic centerpiece to the album, which, at its heart, is all about radiating positivity and love despite the world around us.

This project is ultimately fun, energetic, youthful and loving yet outrageous. Many emotions can be felt throughout Blue Electric Light, showcasing Lenny Kravitz’s amazing ability to stay afloat and above the rest for multiple decades. Die hard fans and casual enjoyers of rock and funk can all come together to appreciate the passion and hard work that went into Kravitz’s 12th album- it’s certainly worth the listen.
