Album Review – Sofi Tukker: BREAD

Iconic dance music duo, Sofi Tukker (Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern), aim to light up the dance floor with their latest album BREAD, or “Be Really Energetic and Dance.” BREAD marks the duo’s third studio album and first since April 2022 when the pair shared their ever-sensual and undeniably fun WET TENNIS. The new release takes a deep dive into Brazil using massive horn ensembles, tasty guitar licks and Portuguese lyrics, all layered on top of dance-heavy rhythms. Its worldly influence and “sky is the limit” production techniques scream Sofi Tukker and will keep casual listeners and diehard fans alike on the dance floor all night long.

The album’s opening and title track “Bread” sets the tone for what’s to come through funky drums and a seductively, flirtatious one-liner, ‘I get off, you get out, I eat bread.’ “Woof,” a collaboration with Kah-Lo, is an extremely sexy tune with a distinct guitar loop and Tucker’s line, ‘I’ll make you woof,’ to match the unbridled fun energy of the track. Another collaboration, “Cafuné,” featuring Channel Tres’ loose vocals alongside a prominent horn progression fit together like a puzzle piece.

The most emotional and intimate track on the album is, “Hey Homie.” The pair knock it out of the park, combining Portuguese and Brazilian guitar with a Liquid Drum n’ Bass beat. Sophie sings genuinely about the topic of falling in love with a friend through music, but not wanting to hurt them. Instead, she suggests, ‘Let me love you low-key.’

Dance anthems “Purple Hat” and “Sun Came Up” are tough to compete with, but Sofi Tukker did it again. This time creating a Brazilian-infused electro-pop album made to make hips shake. It is relatable, energetic, and most importantly, fun!
