Buzzing indie artist Tommy Newport and up-and-coming singer Walter the Producer played the iconic Troubadour stage on Tuesday, Sep. 3.
Newport made his Troubadour performance debut in honor of the release of his new album, Mister Domino. The album features a refreshing balance of both upbeat dance tunes and slower thought-provoking songs. With a combination of new and old and an electrifying energy, it was the perfect performance to fill the intimate space.
As the doors opened, dozens of 20-something-year-olds poured into the crowd and waited in anticipation for the music to start. Promptly at 8 PM, Walter the Producer stepped on stage with his band who were all dressed head to toe in matching white outfits. Illuminated by the red and purple lights, Walter addressed the crowd by sharing his excitement and a final request.
“You guys should probably dance,” he said.
With those words, the music began and the crowd erupted in dancing. The carefree fun environment was infectious as more and more people filled the stage’s pit. Those who were not dancing sat at the bar bobbing their heads and tapping their feet.
Midway through his performance, Walter announced a secret cover song and challenged the audience to guess what he would play. The crowd broke out in cheers after just the first few notes were played, revealing “September” by Earth, Wind, & Fire. The indie-pop vibe quickly turned disco as the song played and the crowd sang along.
Walter ended his set by playing his song “Velma,” thanking the crowd once more and announcing his next show on Sep. 5 in Boyle Heights.
Whether it is his vocal talent or endearing personality, Walter made a great opener for the show and set the party scene for the Troubadour’s patrons.

After a brief intermission, Tommy Newport took the stage in a 1970s-inspired racing jumpsuit- matching helmet and all. Newport’s goofy presence, strong energy, and smooth voice make him compelling to watch and easy to enjoy.
By Newport’s turn on stage, the standing crowd had almost filled the entire bottom floor of the venue. Their cheers and energetic movements reflected a loyal fan base. The indie singer got right into his performance by playing the songs on his new album all while thrashing around the stage and greeting each of his accompanying band members.
The performance was pure fun as Newport even-handed an audience member his microphone stand at one point of the show and continued singing. It was clear that Newport and his band were having just as much fun as the audience.
As the artist and his band wrapped up, they exited the stage and waved goodbye to the seemingly over show. The crowd sighed in disappointment and chants of “one more song” echoed throughout the room. Just when a few people gave up and exited the venue, a spotlight shined from the second-floor dressing room window and Tommy Newport was back to perform his hit song “Tangerine.” Ending the night with an ideal boost of upbeat rhythm and energy.
Although Newport has managed to play iconic stages such as the Troubadour and the Lollapalooza Music Festival, his musical feats are anything but over as he continues his ongoing cross-country tour. Later this month, Newport will head to Miami, FL, and share his music talents with the southern states.
