Album Review: King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard – Flight b741

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard is an Australian rock band consisting of six members, who are all equally credible for creating their rock sound. In their YouTube video “Oink Oink” Flight b741: The Making Of…” the band explains how they enter the studio without a plan or direction for what they will be recording that day. This creates their fresh blend, allowing every single one of them to be artistically involved, gifting listeners with Flight b741.

One of the most amazing things about listening to King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard is that one gets to experience the different flavors everyone puts forward, never knowing what they are going to get. Starting out strong with a song about escape and perspective, “Mirage City” kicks off the album with immense energy.

With electric guitar riffs at a tempo that makes one’s heartbeat rise, “Raw Feel” is about shared experiences and how they can feel differently or even be shared amongst other people. The harmonies of the band, which have them singing so passionately and with such purpose, make their message palpable as they embody these lyrics “What does the sunlight feel like on your skin? / Or the taste of a song that makes you wanna scream.”

“Le Risque” and its deeper meaning is transformed into something that is portrayed in an airy way through the use of harmonica, groovy bass lines and the tone they use in their vocals. This song is hoppy — while the lyrics, “This world it spins too slow / My heart can not beat fast enough / Adrenaline, my dearest friend It’s you and me until the end,” show distress and frustration.

Highlighting the keyboard “Flight b741” also incorporates the tambourine and harmonica combining forces to create this timeless number. The flow of singing does not follow the pattern of the music as one would expect, giving a very special sound that shows the band’s experimentation.

The eighth track on the album “Sad Pilot” is bouncy with an early 2000s sound. The vocals reached in this song are elevating and help bring the song to life. Keeping up with the flight theme of this album, they are creating metaphors such as “I’ll just keep on winging it / I gotta leave my problems at the jet bridge” that ties together their vision.

Flight b741 is an incredible album all the way through. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have been releasing music since 2010. This bond has led them to understand how to create and blend their sound seamlessly.
