The audience for the night came out in style wearing a range of hiking boots to flowing dresses and were ready to make the trek to see the talented Norah Jones perform at the historic Greek Theatre. Opener Mavis Staples set the expectations high for the night as she came in with great energy starting off with “If You’re Ready (Come Go with Me).” Staples gave an amazing and surprisingly intimate performance as she sat on stage drinking her tea and interacting with the audience. The end of her set was met with a round of applause and a standing ovation.
Norah Jones’ set started with “What Am I to You” from her 2002 album Come Away with Me, the stage was lit in warm colors as the main event began, filling the amphitheater with a gentle piano. After the first song Jones began playing “Sunrise,” a fan favorite from her 2004 album Feels Like Home. While both songs were from previous albums, the majority of the night was filled with songs from her most recent album Visions.
The chemistry Norah Jones’ band had with each other was lovely. The group consisted of Jones alongside Brian Blade on drums, Josh Lattanzi on bass and guitar, Sami Stevens on aux keys and supporting vocals, and finally Sasha Dobson on supporting vocals and guitar. Jones performed with multiple instruments throughout the night starting off at the piano, then guitar, as well as a standing keyboard. The multitalented group worked well with each other, but the standout of the show was the harmonies between Norah, Stevens and Dobson, whose voices blended together beautifully.
The night was unfortunately filled with small technical difficulties. There was no bass during the first song as the stage crew circled around Norah Jones at the piano attempting to fix the situation. The audio randomly cut out on some songs or cut off only certain musicians, but the band kept playing — not missing a beat. Norah and her band were extremely professional the entire evening,
Throughout the night Norah Jones received shouted praise during song breaks. She would always smile and play off the crowd, at one point saying “I love it when you talk at me, it makes me so happy. I like a “heckley” crowd as long as it’s nice. I guess that’s not ‘heckley’” laughed Jones.
While the show consisted mostly of songs from Norah’s most recent album Visions including “I’m Awake,” “Queen of the Sea,” “Paradise,” as well as the title track “Visions.” The band also played from the 2012 Little Broken Hearts album, much to the audience’s delight. The closing number was the classic favorite of any Norah Jones fan, her 2002 song “Don’t Know Why,” which ended the night.
While the Visions tour is in support of the new album, there are plenty of Norah Jones stand out hits sprinkled in throughout the night. There was truly something for all Norah Jones fans old and new alike.
