Live Review: Lake Street Dive at The Greek Theatre

Lake Street Dive walked through a glittered curtain from the center of the stage with 3 ringed lights flashing. The lead wore a disco-sparkling dress. The bassist was dressed similarly in a gold top.

The music rapidly transitioned from song to song. Sometimes background music played and the lead singer, Rachael Price, voiced tiny spiels, “So much more show, so much more night.” Immediately after, there was a spotlight on a man playing the trumpet and the crowd erupted. Music from the percussionist, cellist and keys accompanied the vocals.

The last two songs consisted of crowd favorites “Dance With a Stranger” and “You Go Down Smooth,” as the audience all rose to dance. Price entered the crowd and was surrounded by a pit of smiling fans. A camera pointed at her, and the two screens on either side of the stage exhibited a joyful moment of artists interacting with observers.

Celisse, the opener, returned to the stage during the encore to perform a cover of “Rich Girl,” the crowd laughing when the lyrics morphed into “I’m a rich bitch.” The Greek Theatre was perfect for the atmosphere, it engulfed everyone in nature, allowing those in the audience to have a shared human experience. Lake Street Dive offered a safe summer night vibe as light fog descended from the high seats and created a veil over the Greek Theatre’s nearly 5,900 seats.
