Singer, songwriter, and producer Washed Out begins his North American tour today, Aug. 6, and will find his way to Chicago to perform at Metro Chicago on Aug. 9. This tour is in celebration of his latest album, Notes From a Quiet Life, released on June 28, 2024.
Ernest Weatherly Greene, formally known as Washed Out got his start in the music industry back in 2009 when he released his first EP, Life of Leisure. This EP featured “Feel it all Around”, the fourth track on the record. Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein chose this song to be the theme song for their show Portlandia in 2011. This gave Washed Out the boost he needed in the industry.
Since 2009, he has produced and released eleven singles, two EPs, and 6 albums including the one released in June of this year.
The music he produces is often recognized as bedroom pop. He incorporates sounds that align with the chillwave movement. In 2010, Pitchfork even dubbed him the “Father of Chillwave”. He also emphasized that he is influenced by hip-hop when writing songs.
His newest album involves a lot of simplified sounds. Washed Out expressed that “The musical direction on this album felt a lot more minimalist in terms of the production, so I wanted the cover image to mirror that with a starkness and simplicity”.
While his other music may involve more complex production, there is no discounting for solid and simple. The album twinkles with satisfying instrumentals and vocals.
Washed Out will perform in Chicago on Aug. 9, 2024, at Metro Chicago. Tickets can be purchased directly through his website https://washedout.net/Tour, or the Metro Chicago website metrochicago.com.
