Album Review: deadmau5/TESTPILOT – some ep

deadmau5 has returned.

Deadmau5 fans, rejoice. The iconic producer and DJ, known for his mouse-shaped headgear and dance anthems that have dominated dance floors since the 2010s, is returning from a two year solo hiatus. During this break, he collaborated with some of dance music’s biggest names, including Kaskade for the power duo Kx5, and a one-time team up with REZZ as REZZMAU5, which birthed the dark midtempo single “Infraliminal.” Now, for his newest release, some ep, deadmau5 draws influence from these recent collaborations while staying true to his roots, showcasing his evolution as one of EDM’s most famous producers in this four-track, 33-minute EP.

The EP’s first track, “Quezacotl,” was released as a single two weeks before the EP’s release. It is possibly the best track on the EP, invoking feelings of curiosity, exploration, and discovery. The track uses a beautiful melody of pure powerful synths that grow grander as the song moves forward, leaving the listener inspired. “Input Output” follows a similar style with a much clubbier drop, contradicting the bright synth lead. “Sever” embraces a darker, melodic tone, less familiar to deadmau5 fans of the 2010s versus the ones gained over the last two years. Finally, the EP’s second track and most surprising addition, “Wet,” is only the second release ever from deadmau5’s techno alias, TESTPILOT, and it’s a banger. This track needs a large, dark, sweaty warehouse to compliment its grit and grime as the big kick pulses over the ribbiting synths that lure listeners in with its eeriness. Listen to the newest deadmau5 release, some ep, out now.
