Album Review: FREQz – Grizzly Peak

FREQz’s Grizzly Peak is none other than a testament to the band’s ability to seamlessly blend pulsating electronic beats with anthemic rock melodies.

Their debut album, released in June of 2024, is an ode to an infamous location in the band’s hometown, Oakland, California. The album contains 7 tracks that each tell a vastly different story, using a wide range of instruments and mesmerizing sounds.

“Lake Chalet,” sets the stage with its high-energy rock feel, showcasing strong vocals and a captivating beat that instantly grabs the listeners attention. The song vividly depicts the thrill of unexpected feelings blossoming while taking a trip to the lake. The pulsating drum and guitar riffs combine to create a dynamic backdrop for the vocals.

Taking it down a notch is the track “Grizzly Peak.” Although not as upbeat as other tracks on the album, listeners are still in for a treat with dynamic and rich instrumentals complementing the vigorous vocals.

With an immediate euphoric-like sound that only continues throughout the track, “Goldmind,” is a rhythmic blend of pure sonic bliss with distinctive vocals, and different textures from both the guitar and the drum mixed in with some lower-level electronic sounds.

Soothing cymbals draw the listener into the next track, “Running.” These sounds stay throughout the entire track, while in combination with less intense drums and mysterious-sounding vocals, telling a story about the many emotions in one’s head with the strong lyrics “I got time for running out of my mind.”

With electric jolts and a mix of unheard sounds, “Clover,” has a catchy beat and rather fun lyricism, which may give this track the title of the new summer anthem. It will make the listener want to get up and dance, accompanied in step by the different dimensions this track brings. The touches of a distinct cowbell, brings a unique beat and sound to this album as a whole. Simply put, this track has an overall feel-good vibe that brings a new appreciation to the album.
