Album Review: Potatohead People – Eat Your Heart Out

This album is a fusion of Jazz and Hip-Hop.

The Canadian rapper-producer duo, Potatohead People, includes members Nick Wisdom and AstroLogical. They began their journey together in 2008. When the two producers began working together they started their discography with forward-thinking instrumental music. Potatohead People fuse elements of hip-hop, R&B, jazz, and funk all into one.

In May 2024, they dropped their fourth studio album “Eat Your Heart Out.” The electronic album starts off with an instrumental, “The Formula.” They create a sonic scene, getting the listeners ready for what they’re about to experience. It begins with the sounds of someone getting in the car about to be taken on a journey through their album.

Eat Your Heart Out, focuses on the themes of love and falling for someone. For example, track three on the album “Last Nite (ft. Rodman and Kapok)” has lyrics that reminisce on a night out with someone they are falling for, “Last call it caught me off guard / Last night we saw so much stars / Yet here we are, we fall in love and crash hard.” The song combines twinkling sounds in the beginning, connecting the ideal imagery of a night out, and bass creating a beautifully relatable piece.

As the album progresses, the consistency with the bass and other instruments ties each song together, making each song different from the last, while also continuing to focus on the theme of love. For example, “Paradise (ft. Diamond Cafe)” combines bass, saxophone and snare creating a beat reminiscent of the ’80s. The nostalgic ambiance is also reflected in the lyrics, “Chasing the light of what we were / When passion leaves is when we learn / If I promised you I’d take my time / I’d make it happen straight from the heart.” The song focuses on reminiscing about someone and the love they once gave, evoking a sense of longing and hope. The nostalgic atmosphere of the song feels like a hug from memories as one hopes for the love of someone back.

As Eat Your Heart Out reaches the final tracks, it wraps up the theme of love and falling for someone, from the initial stages of falling in love, to reflecting on memories after a fall out and then concluding with songs that symbolize that two people have come together. The second to last song, “Everything U Need (ft. Kendra Dias)” focuses on the idea that the two people have everything each other needs despite facing hardships.

The concluding track, “For The Soul (ft. Moka Only)” features the lyrics, “Love is everything / In life love is everything,” beautifully summarizing the album’s lesson, that despite the struggles love has sometimes, lessons are learned with heartbreak and love is essential in life.

Eat Your Heart Out by Potatohead People was curated with thought, as all sounds throughout the album complement each other. The fusion of different instruments and genres showcases the creativity and thoughtfulness put into each song. The distinctiveness of each track is what makes Potatohead People and Eat Your Heart Out stand out.
