Album Review: Mat Kearney – Mat Kearney

Mat Kearney’s latest album, Mat Kearney, is a rather heartfelt addition to his discography. With the combination of his reflective lyrics and melodic folk pop, this album is perfect for the upcoming summer months.

This album starts off with “Headlights Home,” a track that immediately exudes feel-good energy. This track sets the tone for the album with easy-going, catchy beats to follow along with. We hear the emphasis on Kearney’s vocals blending seamlessly with the tune.

Slowing it down a touch, we have “Real One.” Before it picks up a bit, listeners are treated to Kearney’s wide range of vocals that mesh with the mellowness of the remainder of the track. Through the emotive storytelling of Kearney’s yearning to find “realness,” listeners are able to not only hear his emotions but feel the rawness of his work.

We get to see more Mat Kearney rawness again on the track “Good Thing Going On.” Highlighting the importance of meaningful relationships and the gratitude for those special connections. Picking out the positives, Kearney analyzes the good moments, the happiness, and the joy of relationships in the midst of the challenges life can bring. The warm vocals and instrumentation provide comfort to listeners while embarking on a more emotional journey with this track.

“Watch Me Go” is like a ray of sunshine with the careful use of the ukulele. Themes of determination, resilience, growth, and overcoming challenges are all powerful messages Kearney is able to deliver through this track. The uplighting melody mixed with compelling storytelling is sure to make this track a standout on the album.

To conclude, we have “Dandelion,” a flawless way to end off such a lighthearted yet meaningful album. Listeners get to hear Kearney’s signature acoustic instrumentation, classic vocals, and a melodic beat to follow along. Celebrating resilience, relationships, and life in general, this album will leave you with a smile on your face.
