Album Review: Pallbearer – Mind Burns Alive

The album brings a mind dazzling noise.

Doom metal band Pallbearer has been raising musical havoc since 2008, and last month the band released the album, Mind Burns Alive, where all six songs consist of surging and harmonic instrumentation with emotionally relatable vocal performances. Mind Burns Alive shows how much Pallbearer has matured as a band.

“Where The Light Fades” opens things up by welcoming listeners to the band’s dark world. The electrifying sound of soft guitar playing shakes the background with bittersweet riffs that match the lingering emotions of sadness and despair. “Where The Light Fades” brings a ’70s soft rock vibe within a sad atmosphere.

Unlike the first tune, “Mind Burns Alive” is a heavier piece thanks to guitar and drum playing creating a mix of hard rock and metal music. Through the hollowing vocal performance, the guitars and drums are being played on a slower tempo before switching to a hard musical vibe. “Mind Burns Alive” shows how creative Pallbearer is as a band.

“Endless Place” is another composition some people can relate to. The words “Silent, but for the sound / Of echoes of footsteps / Timelessly circling / This world inside my head,” speaks about getting lost in the darkness that lingers in the mind and how, sadly, some people will never get to break away from that darkness. “Endless Place” is an honest piece with words that relate to and speaks for those who have experienced these feelings.

Mind Burns Alive is a special album that features doom metal blending in with different forms of rock. Pallbearer is not afraid to express themselves and surely the album will sound great when the band performs the tunes live.
