Live Review: Cherry Glazerr at the Teragram Ballroom

Curating a schedule of plans that build in excitement for the month of March will definitely be a challenge since the month started off strong with a performance by Cherry Glazerr. The group of four took the stage at the Teragram Ballroom in Los Angeles this past Friday, March 1st and made waiting in the line wrapping around the block well worth it.

The show started right on time at 9:30 p.m. following the opening act Wombo. Fueling the audience’s enthusiasm, a message was cast onto a projector screen which welcomed them to the venue. The little circles of chatting friends which formed between acts to pass the time diverted their attention from their conversations to the stage, where it remained for the rest of the night. Cherry Glazerr took the stage to a moment of immediate silence which followed the wide eyed realization audience members had that the group had arrived. As for the silence, it lasted about half a second and was replaced by cheers from the audience for the first song of the night, “Touched You With My Chaos.” The heavy beat and light hit of cymbals were the perfect combination that allowed the audience to both dissect the layering of sound and bang their heads to the beat. The passion filled lyrics “said I loved you” that Clementine Creevy sang were met with the high energy lip-syncing and many “singing in the shower” like performances of members of the audience.

The songs “That’s Not My Real Life,” “Told you I’d Be With the Guys,” and “Ready For You” followed the group’s performance of “Touched You With My Chaos,” elevating the already through-the-roof enthusiasm of the audience. Giving the audience a moment to calm down, the group played “Bad Habit” which has indie pop beats in contrast to the strong back beat of the previous songs. Yellow lights illuminated the performers, giving each of them a warm hue which complimented the change in sound and genre. The classic rock elements continued after the four to five song period of melodic notes and tranquility.

In addition to the group’s musical versatility displayed in the seamless transition from classic rock to more indie pop, the performers’ skills were shown with the constant switches the keyboard player made to the bass guitar, the beautiful blend of harmonies from the guitarist and lead singer, and the drummer’s ability to generate two very different and distinctive beats at once.

While getting to see the audience captivated by the band and inhabit the role of rockstars from their spaces in the audience were clear indicators of a successful night, the excitement in people’s voices as they provided their friends with recaps over their favorite parts of the concert was the cherry on top for this amazing night and performance!

Marjan Alagheband: Greetings, my name is Marjan Alagheband and I'm a sophomore at USC studying communication at the Annenberg school and am beginning my minor at USC's Iovine and Young Academy called Designign Digital Experiences. When I'm not doing work for MXDWN I volunteer at an organization in Downtown LA called Chrysalis where I help formerly incarcerated individuals write their resumes to get back into the workforce and work as a copy editor for the Daily Trojan. In my free time I stage photoshoots with friends and go on walks to get some shots of nature. Pictures from a photoshoot I did spring is in a USC student run magazine which highlights feminism and queer culture. I’m so excited to get to work with such a talented group of people who share a passion for music.
