Album Review: Royal Tusk — Altruistic

An album that keeps on giving

Royal Tusk is back with another album that indulges the senses, with Altruistic providing another full-length glimpse into the band’s unwavering talent. “Fire In Your Veins” unleashes the band’s relentless, yet melodic, beat, promising an album rife with purpose and promise. From powerful guitar solos, to a tune that lends itself to a variety of tonal palettes, Altruistic is on point from its inception. And the band is just getting started.

Flowing seamlessly from one poignant track to the next, “Hated” glides from lead singer Daniel Carriere’s lips with equal parts vehemence and grace, the instrumentals melding perfectly with the lyrics. This theme carries from track to track, “All My Life” another example of stirring lyrics coupled with dynamic percussion and the perfect amount of grit and distortion.

Although songs such as “Relegate” are intrinsically Royal Tusk, there are intervals that cut through an otherwise heavy beat, integrating lighter elements to add even more poignancy to the band’s overall sound.

The entire album enmeshes skillful instrumentals with dynamic vocals and more than enough melody to go around. Although the band definitely has a “sound,” it’s nothing short of brilliant and separates them from the competition. Altruistic isn’t afraid to deviate outside its comfort zone but never goes so far as to send listeners into a tailspin. In short, it’s music that works – and works well.

Although Altruistic delivers a high-octane performance filled with “repeat” worthy tracks, there’s also a subtlety to the album that denotes a lighter quality. The lyrics aren’t about screaming a bunch of angry words into the microphone but about conveying a message. A lot of modern-day music lacks depth, with lyrics focusing more on a rhyme pattern than on profundity. But Royal Tusk manages to convey emotion without ostracizing any part of their audience, Altruistic proof of uncompromised talent.
