Coming out with her fifth album Madi Diaz, a singer-songwriter based in Nashville has released Weird Faith. This album is lyrically dominant, with the use of simple instrumentals carrying through the progression of the album. Diaz’s lyrics have the power to make anyone who is feeling insecure feel her heart pleading and stripping right open, allowing listeners to find comfort in her words. Weird Faith is poetry.
The album starts out with “Same Risk” a strong, intense, vulnerable number. The gentle strumming of guitar allows her sound to truly be heard, “‘Cuz I’m standing here naked / saying you could have it all.” The first track shows how Diaz is not afraid to simply state how she feels without hiding.
The fifth track on Weird Faith is titled “Get To Know Me” and we get to do just that throughout this whole album. Inspirationally, Diaz is asking “How well do you want to get to know me? / Do you want to get to know me?” in a song that encompasses all of her insecurities – making Diaz who she is, honest. Diaz brings out stronger and more forceful instruments during this track showing all of her layers. Continuing with the sound from the previous track, Diaz continues to change the vibe of the album for a moment with “Kiss The Wall” which has a more indie-rock sound. Diaz knows her voice so well, putting her breathtaking harmonies in just the right pockets. This track is one to get up and dance to with an overall sensation of freedom, bliss, and getting lost in powerful instrumentals that blend with Diaz’s voice.
The notes that Diaz holds out in the beginning of “God Person” not so coincidentally make her voice sound angelic. She is showing longing for something while looking out into the vast parts of the world, the ocean and the sky, foreshadowing her “driving to the ocean” in the last song on the album. Leading into the eighth song, “Don’t Do Me Good,” features Kacey Musgraves and has the most powerful bridge on the album. Diaz is almost screaming, yearning for her message to get across as powerfully as possible. She blends beautifully into Kacey Musgrave’s voice, as Diaz is grabbing attention while showing extreme passion and heart.
“Obsessive Thoughts” was the perfect way for Diaz to close out the album. She starts out in a low register after taking the listeners through her thoughts in the most graceful way. Ending with a strong ballad, she is screaming in the background of her lyrics “All I got, all I got, / obsessive thoughts.”
It is no surprise after getting the opportunity to dive into Madi Diaz’s Weird Faith that Diaz was hand-picked by Harry Styles to join him not only as an opener for a portion of HSLOT but to be on stage with Harry and the rest of his band. Diaz’s album is wonderful and captivating in all aspects.
