Album Review: Atmosphere – Talk Talk EP

Talk Talk listeners into some more

Atmosphere is for that friend or first date who when delving into their music taste responds with “a lil bit of everything.” However, comparing it to Atmosphere, it’s actually true and genuinely good taste. The latest release from Atmosphere, Talk Talk EP, could be the studio love child of Kanye West, Daft Punk and Aphex Twin. The EP opens up with a menacing track, “Wetter,” which encompasses the more blunt creativity of their lyricism.

Overall, Atmosphere’s work can be described as experimental rap. This EP is one of the more ambient creations of Slug and Ant, the duo behind Atmosphere, and the emotionally ratifying messages behind each song come through true as ever.

One particular mention of the entirety of the EP is the ending transitions of each song, which at the end of track four, “Don’t Mind Me,” is the most noticeable featuring a male and female voice reminiscent of show tunes. Considering it is almost half way through the EP, it is engaging and compels people to listen all the way through to the end of the song as if it were a movie preview and the viewers are left anticipating.

More of the crafted tracks on Talk Talk are electronic, ambient and layered with synth. On the continuation of “Don’t Mind Me,” a possible unintentional joke would be the analysis of the song, to not mind the author as they do not mind themselves. The message is about being unapologetic of the space one takes up in this world, and is a play on the duo’s name.

Talk Talk divulges significantly about time, preaching that the end and the start of time is the same as it doesn’t matter where the audience is, but where the heart is, where it takes up space. Track six, “Hear Hear,” is the last of the tracks on the EP that reflects clearly on the self. The track encompasses a very gentle chime, reminiscent of a nursery rhyme, layered upon synth beats; emotionally projecting a message of support, even when the author is struggling.

Moreover, whether or not Talk Talk’s track seven “Hello Pete” is a genuinely humorously crafted diss track or symbolic of the consequences of not taking action needs to be divulged into more. Either way it is a charming addition to this winter’s EP release from Atmosphere.
