Swans at Great American Music Hall on May 1 & 2

Experimental rock band, Swans, has announced a 2024 tour off the heals of their most recent album, The Beggar. They will be making a stop in San Francisco at Great American Music Hall on May 1 and 2.

Swans is the longstanding musical project of multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter, Michael Gira. First formed in 1982, Swans immediately stood out for their heavy and harsh take on noise rock, industrial music, and post-rock. As the band evolved, they began to introduce more melody into their music as well as elements of folk. Swans first run as a band lasted from 1982-1997, in which they released 10 studio albums.

Swans reformed in 2010 and have been consistently active since. They’ve released six studio albums in the last 13 years, with their most recent, The Beggar, having arrived in June. Their current line-up consists of Michael Gira on vocals and guitar, Kristof Hahn on guitar and lap steel guitar, Christopher Pravdica on bass guitar, Phil Puelo on drums, Larry Mullins on drums, and Dana Schechter on guitars and keys.

During their original run, Swans was notorious for brutal live performances in which they would play so loud that police would sometimes have to stop their shows. The reputation they gained from those incidents led to the original hiatus of the band. Since their reformation, Swans has maintained a less brutal but still noticeable level of intensity. Their upcoming shows in 2024 are certain to be experiences like no other.
