The ideal interstate

Illa J is letting listeners know what’s up from the get go. Posted up in big yellow letters is the title of their latest album, No Traffic. This 19 track release covers a range of themes such as supporting people being true to themselves and following their passions, feeling exactly like “Hittin gas, blowin gas.”

Track number 1 “No Traffic” is an ode to where Illa J has gathered inspiration from- iconic rappers such as Kanye, Kid Cudi, and Lil Wayne. It is an appreciation of rap culture as Illa J makes space for himself. Illa J reflects momentously in his lyrics about the curation of his craft. It is clear that he has great pride in the rhymes, delivery and layering that takes place in his work. He is concise and remarks on his life before he had a career in music. In the track “Relapse,” Illa J verses “come back to rap, it’s what I gotta do, come back to rap.” He motivates one to do the same with their own passions, despite the fearful challenges that may come with the courage to pursue what one loves.

“Shine Your Light,” a collaboration with Sam, highlights both the mental and physical freedom that takes place when people are not self-shackled by the past. To reflect is important, but using a rear view mirror is just a tool that Illa J is keeping his audience in check with. In the song “Doin it,” Illa J remarks on having no regrets, having left university to prioritize the pursuit of his music career. While he emphasizes that fact in the absence of regrets, that does not mean there was an absence of hard falls as well. “Doin it” is an empowering staple on No Traffic, as the accompanied beats have a steady light bass that are just as chill as they are energetic.

Another favored track on the album is most definitely “Plaques,” where Illa J honors those on the journey with him, “ain’t nothing without my dawgs that’ll bark for me.” Creative fields are extremely competitive, particularly the music industry where such toxicity has played a role in ending so many artists’ lives or careers in one way or another. To have support is a blessing and an album appreciating the craft could not neglect emphasizing what it took to get an artist to where they are now. This track also embodies another iconic lyric “we the real shit, you bitches is plastic.”

No Traffic has the potential to be a personal favorite for people who continue to embark on their life’s journey. To be reminded to strive forward in the truest of ways is eternal advice.
