San Francisco based post-metal band, Deafheaven, is playing a show in their hometown on December 7 at The Regency Ballroom in celebration of the 10th anniversary of their breakthrough album, Sunbather.
Deafheaven got their start in 2010 when lead vocalist George Clarke and guitarist Kerry McCoy came together to record a demo album which was positively received by a small audience that came upon the music either via a limited run of cassettes or a select few of the bands’ favorite blogs. Upon the success of the demo, the duo recruited other members and began recording music as a five-piece.
Deafheaven’s debut album, Road to Judah, was released on April 26, 2011 via Deathwish Inc. The album was postively received by critics and audiences alike, even earning the band a spot on MSN’s list of best new bands in 2011. Their follow-up LP was hyped up as a departure from the more traditional black metal sounds on Road to Judah, culminating in 2013’s Sunbather, the band’s most well-known album to date. The record was written entirely by original members Clarke and McCoy and featured a more expansive sound palette that blurred genre lines completely.
Sunbather brought the band great success and cemented them as one of the best metal-adjacent acts of the modern age. They have since released three albums, New Bermuda in 2015, Ordinary Corrupt Human Love in 2018, and Infinite Granite in 2021. As the band’s sound continues to evolve, they have not forgotten where they came from, paying homage to the success of Sunbather through a 10th Anniversary North American Tour this fall. Deafheaven is vocalist George Clarke, guitarist Kerry McCoy, drummer Daniel Tracy, guitarist and keyboarding Shiv Mehra, and bassist Chris Johnson.
