Turning the corner, one could hear the music and chatter coming from the outdoor venue where Poppy was previewing her latest studio album, Zig, which will be released everywhere on October 27th. The event, which was held at FYI Campus, was filled with a variety of activities for attendees. An ice cream truck, beverages, signed posters, ski ball, photo booths and air hockey were all available for fans to enjoy leisurely. Poppy’s creative process also draws on a variety of creative media and visuals to support her work. This was evident through the use of a projector with both visuals and clips from past music videos playing in the background. As attendees continued to trickle in, I learned more about Poppy’s background and previous musical experience from her fans. It was evident that the night was designed with them in mind. They all spoke about her music and art with so much passion, many of them following her career since the beginning.
A few minutes later, Poppy came out to greet fans and partake in some of the activities. She made time for everyone individually, took pictures and even played air hockey before making her way over to the microphone to address the crowd. She took the time to thank everyone for their support before introducing her new album, Zig, which would be played shortly. Many of her previous songs such as “Hard,” “Knockoff” and “Church Outfit” served as the intro before Poppy’s newest work was played.
Longtime fans won’t be surprised to hear that this album has a different sound than her previous work, but at the same time still remains so quintessentially her. This album is made up of a handful of songs that really highlight the growth of Poppy as a musician. There’s a variety of songs on the album, so there’s sure to be something everyone can enjoy. The songs have mainly pop/electronic-roots, there are also plenty of metal and rock influences. A few songs begin with more indie undertones and softer instrumentals before transitioning into baseline heavy choruses and verses. For me, a standout was one of the last songs of the night. This was so memorable because of the hard-hitting lyricism and production of the song. “I’m the blood and the guts / Spilling all over the page / I’m on the wall of the gallery / On display.” Throughout, this song felt like it drew from punk, metal and pop influences at the same time.
Can Poppy be strictly defined as metal, electronic, pop or rock? She is able to welcome the present without completely banishing her past sound. Overall, Poppy is able to tap into all of these genres and weave her past musical eras into the present to create something fresh and unique.
