Album Review: Myrkur – Spine

Mind dazzling folk and metal

Myrkur is a black metal solo project lead by the vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Amalie Bruun, Spine is the fourth studio album and was released on October 20th. Each track on the album is filled with folk metal that sizzles the atmosphere with enchanting sounds, while Bruun’s vocals serenade the ears with beautiful melodies. The music on Spine shows how much the artist cares about creating meaningful music.

“Like Humans” is the second tune on Spine and the best part is how relatable the lyrics can be. The words “I am a ghost / I am the most familiar nowhere / Will you stay with me” touch on how easy it is to feel lost in life and longing to find someone to be with them while the darkness consumes their minds. It is a gorgeous composition with relatable lyrics.

“Spine” is a rather lovely composition thanks to Bruun’s beautiful vocal performance. Throughout the whole piece, the vocalist can be heard shaking the background with melodies that blend folklore themes. Bruun does a good job using her voice to discuss the story behind this composition with her crafted lyricism.

“Valkyriernes Sang” is Myrkur’s current single from the album. As a whole, the solid instrumentation brings a mystical vibe that contributes to the elegant theme. Bruun’s vocal performance is captivating as she sings out the beautiful lyrics with her melodic voice. “Valkyriernes Sang” is a track that shows how insightful music can be if only an audience is willing to listen.

“Devil In Detail” captures how powerful Bruun is as an artist, her vocals are more high pitched and powerful. Each tone brings with it a sense of insecurity, the dynamic instrumentation creates a musical vibe that matches the emotions Bruun is singing about.

Spine truly shows how musically hungry Myrkur is as an artist. Each tune showcasing just how passionate the artist is about her music.
