Thurston Moore is doing press for his imminent new memoir Sonic Life (though he unfortunately had to cancel his book tour due to health reasons), and people are asking him if Sonic Youth will reunite. “Everybody wants us to get back together,” he told The New York Times. “I don’t foresee it happening because I think maybe it’s a little too unwieldy at this point… and that goes against the nature of what the band was. I’d rather be like the Beatles and never get back together.”
However, he did say that reforming the band would “be really worthwhile” and “something that’s always going to be on the table.”
As for whether it would be an issue for Thurston and his ex-wife Kim Gordon to play in the same band together again, “We’re adults,” he says. “We can find our peace in this kind of situation. We’re very connected in our family with my daughter and my nieces and everything. It’s not like some hate-fest or anything.”
Thurston also spoke more about his health condition, atrial defibrillation–“a common heart-rhythm abnormality”–that he’s had for years. “But this year, it became slightly concerning,” he said. “I was finding myself at times to be so weak I could hardly walk around the neighborhood.” On a positive note, he’s currently awaiting treatment and says “the prognosis is very good.”
Sonic Life comes out on October 24. Pre-order it here.
