English electronic/indie-rock band Ladytron performed at Los Angeles’ Belasco Theater on Friday September 22 in support of their latest release Time’s Arrow.
Playing the whole set under their customary lighting choice, a single projector incorporating a variety of moving artwork across the stage, illuminated the performers as they played a mellow and ethereal set covering their entire catalogue.
Despite being labelled a ‘synthpop’ band, the live performance relied heavily on Daniel Hunt’s guitar, as well as the live drums, ably performed by Peter Kelly, who remained constantly in motion throughout the set.
Lead vocalist Helen Marnie seemed to be enjoying herself, frequently detaching the microphone for a graceful twirl around the stage, hitting the high notes with aplomb, especially on numbers such as “California” and recent release “Misery Remember Me.” Mira Aroyo was given her chance to shine, taking lead vocals on “True Mathematics” and “Fighting in Built Up Areas,” the latter of which she sang in her native Bulgarian.
The setlist ranged throughout their whole back catalogue, encompassing long-time fan favorites such as “Seventeen” from Light & Magic, “Discotraxx” and “Playgirl” from the band’s first release 604, and a handful of songs from Time’s Arrow. These included opener “City of Angels” and “Flight From Angkor.”
Saving the best/most-popular for last, the encore closed out with “Destroy Everything You Touch,” which went down to raucous applause, as well as an ocean of cell-phones held aloft.
