Album Review: Echosmith – Echosmith

Reflective Lyrics and Upbeat Production

Echosmith, the family indie pop band, recently released their new self-titled album. This is the band’s first album in three years, and it really showcases their growth as artists. On these 12 tracks, they really lean into their lyrics to reflect on themselves and the world around them, while sonically producing groovy upbeat tracks.

“Porcelain,” is a reflective pop track that opens the album on an introspective note. The lyrics are about getting broken down and going through difficult times. Despite the somewhat-sad message, it is an upbeat and groovy track that is driven by drums, electric guitars and synths, which all create and maintain the poppy sound.

The second track, “Sour,” was a popular single on the album. It is another pop track with sad and introspective lyrics. On this one, they reflect on a long-distance relationship and how it is getting more sour the longer they are apart. Once again, they keep the pop production upbeat and fun with guitars, synths and drums.

The fourth track, “Hindsight,” is another fun song. The lyrics reflect on things looking better in the past. They are accompanied by acoustic guitars and pop synths. This track amounted to hundreds of thousands of streams before the album even came out, and is still proving to be one of the most popular.

The tenth track, “Hang Around,” is a love song with an upbeat indie-pop vibe. They sing about not minding that they have fallen for someone and have strong feelings for them. Behind the lyrics are electric guitars, bass and drums.

The final track, “Shelter,” is a more haunting pop track. They sing about helping and protecting someone when the world is too much to take in. The accompaniment includes electric guitars, bass, synths and drums.

Overall, Echosmith’s newest self-titled album is a reflective collection of lyrics that are backed by upbeat pop production making for a thoroughly enjoyable listen for all.

Stephanie Pratt: I am a student at Hamilton College majoring in economics and minoring in Spanish and music. Music and writing are two of my passions. I listen to every genre, but my favorite is indie-pop. I have studied and learned to play many different genres of guitar, from classical and rock to pop and indie. I also play piano and have begun to write music. In my free time, I enjoy exploring new and upcoming artists, photography, and writing music. I have attended Berklee College of Music, where I learned more about the music industry, guitar theory, music production, and songwriting. I also love to attend live music events and am often at The House of Blues in Boston checking out my favorite bands.
