Erratically entertaining
Mutoid Man’s latest album, Mutants, is erratic, slightly disheveled and completely perfect. From the punchy vocals and entertaining lyrics to the wild instrumentals that effortlessly mirror the band’s overall vibe, this album has something for everyone.
For starters, take their slightly insidious (and completely comical) official music video for “Call of the Void.” It is arguably one of the most dynamic videos available this year and something worth watching several times to take it all in. It’s inventive and original and leaves behind a general feeling of unease. It’s everything a person would expect from Mutoid Man and, much like the rest of the album, doesn’t disappoint.
The music is erratic and fun, there are no two ways about it. The entire album promises mutated music, from the wild cover art to the evocative guitar solos that have a slightly discordant feel despite being perfectly spot on. That type of sound requires an artfully skilled ear and, coupled with the occasional primal scream, there’s nothing to complain about with Mutants.
“Broken Glass Ceiling” takes the listener on a wild ride, the song toggling from a variety of keys, making it impossible to predict where the band is going. The poignant screams feel less like music and more like live living art and it’s clear that Mutoid Man refuses to pander to the public. Despite their music being reflective of their creativity, it still manages to do just that — cater to listeners and grab a hold of their innermost interests. The music is guttural and visceral and quite positively one of the most unique albums available this year. A band can rarely take a myriad of thoughts and emotions and execute them into music that translates as intended, but Mutoid Man does this effortlessly.
“Siren Song” is one of the best tracks on the album and decides to live in a minor realm, refusing to leave its poignant place on the album. The beat is infectious and the vocals throw in the occasional vibrato — the reminder that there is an incredible amount of talent setting this band into motion. They’re not your average hard rockers; there is an insurmountable amount of talent and Mutants unleashes the beast. The entire album refuses to pull its punches and the result is something raw, candid and worth listening to over and over.
