Album Review: Quiet Man – The Starving Lesson

Authoritative and delightfully dark

Philadelphia-based metal band Quiet Man have been creating musical havoc since 2015 and earlier this month the band released their latest album The Starving Lesson. Each track features stellar instrumentation that sizzles the air with intensity while the vocal performance dazzles the mind with great authority. The Starving Lesson proves that doom metal music can still thrive in today’s music world.

“Set to Boil Is The New Standard” is a dark composition which features an incredible vocal performance from Ross Bradley and Joe Hughes. Throughout the entirety of the track, both vocalists are shrieking, wailing and grumbling out the lyrics with pure emotion. The way Bradley and Hughes exercise their voices is simply stunning and undeniably impressive.

The title track “The Starving Lesson” is a true head banger thanks to the fabulous drum playing by Jason Jenigen. Right off the bat, face-smacking drum beats can be heard emerging from the background with great power. Jenigen’s drum pattern brings a strong mix of metal and rock vibes because of the simple yet effective musical tempo. Needless to say, the righteous drum playing steals the show on “The Starving Lesson.”

“From Tomorrow’s Dead Hiss” is a tune that features sizzling guitar and bass playing from Bradley, Hughes, Jack Sterling and Keith Riecke. While the music blares from the speakers, vein jolting guitar riffs can be felt through each vibration. “From Tomorrow’s Dead Hiss” is a track that highlights how passionate Quiet Man are with their music and their contributions to the genre as a whole.

“At Operating Temp” is a melancholic instrumental piece which features electronics from Sterling who cements the realism of the track. This is done by incorporating high pitched sounds that resemble a heart monitor of a fading pulse. On “At Operating Temp,” the instrumentation truly shows the darker sides of life, contributing to the doomy mood.

Metalheads will not be disappointed with Quiet Man’s latest effort, The Starving Lesson, thanks to the intense yet intricate instrumentation and powerful vocal performances.
