Album Review: PWNT – Play What’s Not There

A Groovy, Interesting Album

L.A-based artist PWNT released his debut album Days In The Summer in 2021, and returns in 2023 with his new record, Play What’s Not There. This album is full of upbeat and groovy tracks that are layered with percussion, electric pianos and guitars.

“From Me to You,” is a groovy and laid-back track that draws the listener in. With layered guitars, piano and percussion, the listener is introduced to the retro-and-vibe sound. The vocals float lightly over the top of the instrumentation. PWNT sings about trying to get through to someone but struggling to do so. This is an easygoing and captivating track that offers listeners a glimpse of what’s to come on the rest of the record.

The third track, “All Depends on You,” offers another relaxing vibe. PWNT is joined by Will Fox, an impressive producer and drummer. This track features similar instrumentation, with a bouncy piano, guitars and lots of percussion. Despite the full instrumentation, it is able to maintain a relaxed and organic sound, as everything blends together seamlessly.

The sixth track, “Underwater Chateau,” is a beautifully light composition. It is a nostalgic track with old electric pianos, layered harmonies and lively sodding instrumentation. It sounds retro and the lyrics are imaginative, referring to their “underwater chateau.” This is a fun and mood-boosting track.

The eighth track, “Never So Bad,” offers another relaxing vibe. They sing about missing someone who is never coming back. The lyrics are sad, but the tone is filled with acceptance of their loss. This is a heartbreaking track but also makes for a peaceful listen.

The final track, “Reprise,” is an energetic and well-produced song that is sure to leave listeners in a good mood. The lyrics are embroidered with imagery of floating in the sky, reflecting the positive vibe of the track. The instrumentation is filled with bells, piano and energetic percussion that is sure to leave listeners feeling happy and uplifted, which is always an inspiring way to end the album.

Overall, PWNT’s latest record is a groovy collection of songs that is sure to captivate listeners.

Stephanie Pratt: I am a student at Hamilton College majoring in economics and minoring in Spanish and music. Music and writing are two of my passions. I listen to every genre, but my favorite is indie-pop. I have studied and learned to play many different genres of guitar, from classical and rock to pop and indie. I also play piano and have begun to write music. In my free time, I enjoy exploring new and upcoming artists, photography, and writing music. I have attended Berklee College of Music, where I learned more about the music industry, guitar theory, music production, and songwriting. I also love to attend live music events and am often at The House of Blues in Boston checking out my favorite bands.
