Album Review: Cavalera – Morbid Visions

A vein-jolting return

Heavy metal band Cavalera was formed in 2007 by brothers Max and Igor Cavalera. Earlier this month the duo released Morbid Visions, an updated version of Sepultura’s 1986 debut studio album of the same name. This version of Morbid Visions is filled with re-recording songs from the original. Although the album is 38 minutes long, each track is filled with vein jolting instrumentation and dominant vocal performances.  Morbid Visions is bolder and louder than the original.

The title track “Morbid Visions” welcomes listeners to the band’s chaotic musical world where Cavalera shocks them with sizzling guitar riffs, fast paced drum beats and a powerful vocal performance. “Morbid Visions” is a certified headbanger that is best enjoyed blaring from listeners’ speakers.

Heart stopping “War” features Max Cavalera showing off his vocal skills. Right off the bat, Max can be heard shaking the background with his powerfully grungy voice. His anger is clear in his shouting of the lyrics; there are a lot of strong emotions present throughout the vocals of “War.”

Vein-jolting “Show Me The Wrath” is a killer composition which features Cavalera playing his heart out on the guitar. Right at the beginning, intense guitar riffs can be heard filling the air with top notch sounds. The guitar solo is wonderful, each note captures how passionate he is as a musician.

Closing track “Burn The Dead” ends the album on a high note thanks to Igor and Max’s immense talent which shines brightly on this song. The guitar and drum playing brings a heavy dose of metal while the vocal performance is filled with great power. This version “Burn The Dead” is arguably better than the original thanks to the instrumentation and vocals being louder and sharper.

The original version of Morbid Visions is great but the latest version of the album is fantastic; Cavalera were able to add better dynamics making for an all-around solid record of pure metal.
