Esteemed singer-songwriter Regina Spektor will be playing in Evanston on July 29. This stop at Canal Shores Golf Course is the second date on her 2023 summer tour, and is a part of the Out of Space concert series. The series has been a staple in Chicago’s North Shore since 2008. Sponsored by local venue and restaurant, SPACE, the outdoor concerts have brought extraordinary talent like Spektor to Evanston for a musical experience right next to Lake Michigan.
Born in Moscow to musical parents, Spektor began honing her musical skills at age seven. She was introduced to classical music as well as bands like The Beatles and Queen through her father’s cassette tapes. Spektor’s family eventually immigrated to New York, where the artist wrote her first songs and began playing at local venues and colleges. Her first two albums, 11:11 and Songs were recorded and distributed by Spektor herself, leading her to tour with the likes of The Strokes and Kings of Leon and eventually landing her a record deal with Sire Records.
Since then, Spektor has established herself as one of the leading voices in anti-folk and indie pop. She has released eight studio albums that showcase her unique vocal style and songwriting. Spektor often writes about characters, folklore and stories from her own imagination, pairing this with her moving, piercing falsetto. The artist is inspired by “bands whose music is really involved,” ranging from David Bowie to Patti Smith to Radiohead.
Her latest project, Home, Before and After, was released last June to widespread praise. The album demonstrates Spektor’s top notch storytelling skills as well as her strengthened experimentation with different production styles. The tracks were also heavily influenced by Spektor’s idea of home in relation to her immigration from Moscow. About the project, Spektor has said “I just feel like all we can do at times like these is to share stories as much as you can,”
