Soccer Mommy @ The Independent on August 12th, 2023

Soccer Mommy (real name Sophia Regina Allison) will be playing at The Independent on August 12th (before her appearance at Outside Lands the next day).

Sophia Allison was born in Zürich, Switzerland, but at the age of two moved with her parents to Nashville, Tennessee, a renowned hot-bed of musicality. In the summer between graduating from the Nashville School of Arts and starting her first semester at NYU’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, Allison uploaded her first songs as Soccer Mommy to Bandcamp. After arriving in New York, she began to play live shows at New York venues like Silent Barn, and quickly got notice and acclaim for her talent and her original voice and sound.

Signing to Fat Possum records, Allison dropped out of NYU, moved back to Nashville, and began making music full-time, putting out her debut studio album, Clean, in March 2018. The album propelled her towards a touring life, opening for musicians such as Paramore, Kacey Musgraves, and Liz Phair. After a second album in 2020, Color Theory, Allison released a third album, Sometimes, Forever, in summer 2022, produced with Oneohtrix Point Never’s Daniel Lopatin, and put out on Loma Vista Recordings.

The album’s title derives from her recognition that all feelings, good and bad, are temporary; they don’t last forever, even though they may feel as though they will. Many of the songs were written during the pandemic lockdown in 2020, a time when Allison started going to therapy and spent much of her time outside. She said in an interview with Stereogum, “The only stuff I would do would be go with my friends out to the lake or the Steeplechase or go on walks at Radnor Lake.” Regarding her state of mind these days, as result of therapy and self-care/self-work, Allison said in a conversation with Pitchfork’s Quinn Moreland that she is now a “much more positive person”. The record hears Allison confronting and discussing dark mental spaces and times with a frankness and a faithful searching for (and finding of) the light.
