Gogol Bordello at Concord Music Hall on July 27

Punk-rock band Gogol Bordello is setting out on a summer tour following the release of their 2022 album, Solidartine. The group’s tour kicks off tomorrow in Denver, CO, and will make its way to Chicago on July 27 at Concord Music Hall.

Since its inception in 1999, Gogol Bordello has sought to integrate Romani music into more mainstream genres, like punk rock and folk. The group is named after Nikolai Gogol, who the band considers to have “smuggled” Ukrainian culture into Russia as they want to do with Romani music into typical English genres. The band has released six studio albums with multiple record labels to high praise from music outlets.

Additionally, the band has also been featured in over ten films, working with the likes of Liev Schreiber and Elijah Wood. Gogol Bordello was also the subject of their own documentary, Gogol Bordello Nonstop, which was released in 2008 and praised for its passion in its storytelling.

Gogol Bordello has always been about refusing to conform and pushing the boundaries of what music can be. The band’s own mission statement professes that “it is clear that [the] world’s cultures contain materials for endless art possibilities and new mind-stretching combinations, raw joy, and survival energy.” These themes are apparent in the group’s newest album, Solidartine, which is all about supporting Ukraine in the Russian-Ukraine War. The album does what the band has always done: combines different styles of folk music with gypsy punk and punk rock. Solidartine has been lauded as the band’s best, most sophisticated release by critics.
