Le Tigre at The Salt Shed on July 15

Electronic rock band Le Tigre is reuniting for their first tour in over 18 years. Their 2023 Tour began in Philadelphia on May 27, and will be stopping off in Chicago at The Salt Shed on July 15.

Le Tigre was formed by Kathleen Hanna, Johanna Fateman, and Sadie Benning (who was later replaced by JD Samson) in 1998 in New York City. The group originally started as Fateman and Benning helping Hanna with her new solo project, but eventually morphed into a collaborative band. Le Tigre signed with Mr. Lady Records, and released their first self-titled album in 1999.

Since then, the band has released three studio albums, Le Tigre in 1999, Feminist Sweepstakes in 2001, and This Island in 2004. The band’s mission is to create a “new genre of dance music for feminists,” which they are certainly successful in doing. They are noted for their sarcastic and satirical lyrics, as well as their incorporation of funk and punk to the phenomenon of “girl groups” in the late nineties. Their discography also is chalked full of woman-empowering  themes and commentary on their place in the world.

In 2007, Le Tigre entered what they called a “long hiatus” due to burn out and their desire to pursue solo careers. The band has reunited a few times since then, notably to record their song “I’m With Her” to show their support for Hilary Clinton in 2016 and to perform at This Ain’t No Picnic festival last year. Their reunion tour has been a nostalgic trip down memory lane for early adopters of riot grrrl pop. Critics have noted the band’s mix of joy and rage that they release on stage, resulting in a cathartic experience for their fans.
