Reggae-dub band Stick Figure is heading out on their 2023 “Wisdom Summer” Tour, with support from Pepper and The Elovaters. The tour follows their seventh studio album, Wisdom, which was released in late 2022. The band will be stopping in Chicago on July 11 at The Salt Shed.
Stick Figure was founded by songwriter and instrumentalist Scott Woodruff out of Massachusetts in 2006. Woodruff published his first music on Sublime’s archive website, and released his first album The Sound of My Addiction shortly after. After a few successful albums, Woodruff put together his touring band, which now consists of Kevin Bong, Kevin Offitzer, and Tommy Suliman. The group has headlined multiple tours, as well as toured with acts like Passafire, Rebelution, and Tribal Seeds.
Stick Figure is known for their style of layering tracks and using loops. Woodruff records all tracks separately and layers them on top of each other to create a united sound. The band has been praised for their contributions to the reggae and dub scene, as well as their innovation in the genre.
The group’s latest album, Wisdom, is all about the journey, as Woodruff puts it. “Wisdom is a code to live by where we can accept that it is okay to start over, to make mistakes, to love, and to feel pain,” the lead vocalist says of the album. Many of the tracks were written during the COVID pandemic, adding to the thematic elements Woodruff describes.
Stick Figure has been selling out shows for years, and that does not go unnoticed to the group. Many elements go into Stick Figure shows, such as arrangements, lighting, and setlist. But the real magic comes from the audience. The band showed their appreciation for their fans by playing them a new song on their last tour, and featuring their voices on the final track, “Smoke Signals.” Woodruff’s Australian Shepherd, now known as Cocoa the Tour Dog, also frequently makes appearances on stage.
The band kicked off their tour on May 27 in Monterey, CA. Now towards the end of their run, you can see Stick Figure at The Salt Shed on July 11. Tickets are still available here.
